GemFair & De Beers Group Launch Ethical Diamond Capsule Collection with De Beers London

Overview: Ethical Diamonds Enter the Luxury Market

De Beers Group has announced a significant collaboration between its sourcing initiative GemFair and its luxury jewellery house De Beers London. This partnership introduces a capsule jewellery collection featuring ethically sourced artisanal diamonds, marking the first time GemFair diamonds are made available directly to consumers through a high-end retail channel.

The initiative represents a strategic effort to connect artisanal mining communities with the global luxury market through transparency, traceability, and responsible sourcing.

GemFair: Advancing Ethical Sourcing in Artisanal Mining

GemFair is designed to formalise the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector by establishing clear standards and providing miners with access to fair and transparent markets. The programme includes:

  • Fair value purchasing mechanisms
  • Training to improve safety and operational practices
  • Digital tools enabling end-to-end traceability
  • Third-party verified assurance systems

As part of Building Forever, GemFair contributes to long-term sustainability goals by focusing on community development, environmental stewardship, and responsible sourcing practices.

Capsule Collection: Design and Concept

The capsule collection by De Beers London consists of twelve unique pieces that combine both rough and polished GemFair diamonds. The designs reflect a deliberate effort to showcase the full journey of each diamond.

Key features include:

  • Use of both natural rough diamonds and expertly polished stones
  • Signature designs such as Toi & Moi rings and Modern Lines sets
  • Individual selection of diamonds based on character and quality

This approach provides a direct visual and conceptual link between the origin of the diamond and the craftsmanship involved in its transformation.

Geographic and Social Impact

The GemFair programme was launched in 2018 in the Kono region of Sierra Leone, where artisanal mining plays a significant role in local livelihoods.

Programme impact includes:

  • Participation from more than 500 artisanal mine sites
  • Support for approximately 7,000 direct livelihoods
  • Sourcing of over 20,000 diamonds
  • More than 5,700 compliance visits conducted

In addition, land rehabilitation efforts have converted nearly 160 abandoned mine sites into agricultural land, alongside initiatives supporting food security through seed distribution.

Strategic Significance for the Diamond Industry

This collaboration reflects a broader shift in the luxury sector, where ethical sourcing and transparency are increasingly central to brand value. By integrating GemFair diamonds into its collections, De Beers London reinforces the importance of:

  • Responsible sourcing practices
  • Supply chain transparency
  • Socioeconomic development in mining communities

For De Beers Group, the initiative strengthens its positioning as a leader in sustainability and ethical transformation within the global diamond industry.
